West of England Challenge Vase

In 2004, Bristol Avon Regatta hosts the West of England Challenge Vase for Elite coxed fours, which comes to us every 5 years. Awarded to the winners of Men’s Elite Coxed Fours and is widely recognised as being the premier provincial trophy for men’s coxed fours.

The West of England Challenge Vase was won by the composite crew from Bristol Ariel RC and Molesey BC.

This was sponsored by Millennium Quest Limited

This magnificent William IV solid silver vase was made in Birmingham in 1834, and was jointly acquired in 1877 by a group of representatives of regattas held at Bath (later Saltford, currently at Bristol city docks), Worcester, Tewkesbury, Hereford and Shrewsbury. It was first put up for competition in that year in Bath, when Pengwern Boat Club were the winners.

The races for the trophy took place at each of the five venues in rotation until 1900, which was the last occasion on which it was held at Tewkesbury. In 1930, by then having only one surviving member, Tewkesbury gave up their interest to Gloucester. In 1977 the present Bristol Avon Regatta replaced the now defunct one at Saltford.

In recent years the competition has evoked wider interest beyond the original “provincial” boundaries and has frequently been won by clubs from the Thames and other regions.

We therefore invite you to enter a crew for this prestigious competition as well as other events, and look forward to seeing you at Bristol Avon.
